HIE - State-wide Health Information Exchanges

The ability to develop and sustain health information exchanges at a state-wide level is challenged by two competing pressures. The first is securing the continued success of the HIE itself. The second is maintaining proper balance between technology requirements and operational realities. This applies of course to the state level – but more importantly to grassroots, local healthcare providers where the success or failure of healthcare exchange is more vulnerable. For state governments, this pressure is compounded by Federal funds as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). State governments must build consensus among stakeholders and develop models that deliver sustainable results.
