As was expected, the final rules on Meaningful Use and EMR implementation were announced at 10am this morning. (see press release for details).
There are no quick-fix, technology-driven solutions for EMR adoption by physician practices, as demonstrated by this massive document of rules and regulations.
The focus must be on change management - specifically, how a practice operates and its adoption and use of technology to improve efficiencies that result in lower costs and higher quality of care. Because physicians do not have the time or capacity to successfully transition records on their own, it is crucial to seek outside expertise in advance of the 2013 deadline. Without proper evaluation and adoption of EMR solutions that fit with the specific operational realities of individual practices, the practice itself can be at risk.
I am in the process of working with our team to thoroughly review the document. Continue to look here for ongoing, in-depth posts on what this will mean for ambulatory physician practices - highlighting changes from the original draft version.
